Notes and Mistakes to Avoid
I've been handling fleet vehicle accessory installs for about six years. I've personally made—and documented—four significant mistakes, totaling roughly $2,800 in wasted budget and rework. This is the checklist I now use before installing a BlackVue dash cam, adding OBD-II power, or setting up a work truck.
Some of these steps sound obvious. The one that's not obvious is Step 2. I built a $900 mistake around it.
A quick note on my bias: when there's a real deadline, I'll pay for certainty. A rush fee might be a lousy budget line item, but a missed install date is worse. I've been burned twice by 'probably on time' promises, so now I build a buffer into every vehicle project. Remember that when you get to the notes at the end.
Before You Start: When to Use This Checklist
Use this when you're equipping more than one vehicle, or when you're installing a dash cam and deciding what to do with the OBD-II port. It applies to work trucks, service vehicles, and small fleets. If you're doing a one-off install on your own truck, you'll still get useful steps. The expensive lessons came from doing this at scale.
Step 1: Choose the Dash Cam Configuration Before You Touch Wiring
Why does this matter? Because the number of channels determines what you need from the install. On a work truck, I want to see the road ahead, the driver area, and what's happening behind the vehicle. That's why BlackVue dash cam 3 channel systems are popular in fleets: front, rear, and interior in one unit.
In 2022, I installed single-channel cams across a small fleet. When a driver said a customer had been hurt during loading, the front camera didn't show anything useful. We didn't have interior coverage. The claim dragged because we simply didn't have the footage. We upgraded to 3-channel units after that. It wasn't cheap. Neither was the time we lost.
That third channel also changes how you choose storage. More video streams means you want a high-endurance SD card, and if you use cloud features, the settings need to be tuned for upload versus local storage. Easier to make those choices when you know the camera configuration from the start.

Step 2: Verify the OBD-II Port and Cable Compatibility First (Most People Skip This)
This is the step I'd redo if I could. The BlackVue OBD-II power cable is a neat way to power your dash cam and keep parking mode active without hardwiring to a fuse box. But it's not universal.
I once ordered 40 BlackVue OBD-II power cables based on the connector type listed in the manual. They looked right on paper. They weren't. In the trucks, the OBD-II port was mounted at an angle, and the cable's strain relief hit the trim. We couldn't close the lower dash panel. We had to buy right-angle adapters, redo part of the installs, and toss the ones that wouldn't fit. Roughly $900 in labor and wasted parts.
Before you order a BlackVue OBD-II power cable, look at the port. Take a photo. Check whether it's upside down, sideways, or buried under the dash. Also decide if the dash cam will occupy the port full-time. If you also need an OBD2 scanner in the same vehicle, you might need a splitter or a hardwire kit instead.
Checkpoint: Does the OBD-II cable seat fully without interfering with the trim? Can you still reach the port? If the answer is no to either, consider a different power path.
Step 3: Know What to Look for in an OBD2 Scanner
Once you're working around the OBD-II port, the question of what to look for in an OBD2 scanner usually comes up. Not a $15 code reader. A scanner that helps you make maintenance decisions.
When I compared a cheap code reader and a real scanner on the same truck side by side, I finally understood why the details matter. The cheap reader gave me a code. The scanner gave me live sensor data, freeze-frame data, and readiness monitor status. Same problem. Completely different information.
For a fleet, here's what to look for in an OBD2 scanner:
- Live data: Can you see coolant temperature, O2 sensor voltage, and RPM in real time?
- ABS and SRS coverage: Engine codes are only part of the picture.
- Vehicle coverage: Does it handle the brands in your fleet, not just generic OBD-II modes?
- Firmware updates: You don't want a scanner that goes stale when a new model shows up in the depot.
One more thing: don't buy a scanner based only on the app. Some scanners require a subscription for certain features. Check the total cost of ownership. A scanner that looks cheap can end up costing more than a business-grade unit after two years.
Per FTC guidelines (ftc.gov), a claim like 'works on all vehicles' has to be substantiated. My experience: test the scanner on the oldest and newest vehicle in your fleet before you buy enough for every truck.
Step 4: Use an Impact Wrench You Can Actually Rely On
This next item isn't a dash cam part. But every fleet install eventually turns into a broader service project.
During a weekend emergency at one of our depots, I had to change a tire on a work truck with a cross wrench and a 15-minute deadline. That was bad math. We now keep the Craftsman V20 cordless impact wrench (CMCF900B) in the install kit. It's not the most powerful impact wrench I've used. For lug nuts and light undercarriage work, it has been consistently good, and it doesn't take up much space.
Also, keep a spare battery charged. The Craftsman V20 system uses batteries we already have in our fleet tools, so the wrench stays usable without a separate charger. That matters more than the brand name.
Checkpoint: If you're adding accessories to a truck, make sure your crew can actually remove the wheels. A solid 1/2-inch impact wrench will save you more time than almost any other tool in the box.
Step 5: Measure the Hitch Receiver Before Buying a Rack
I still kick myself for ordering a 2-bike rack for truck hitch without measuring the receiver first. I assumed it was a 2-inch receiver. It was a 1.25-inch receiver. The rack sat in a box for a week while we found an adapter. If I'd taken a tape measure out to the parking lot, I could have ordered the right version the first time.
The bike rack mistake happened in September 2021, but I still remember the shipping label. The adapter itself was cheap. The wasted week wasn't.
The hitch also affects the rear view. A hitch-mounted rack can block a rear-facing dash cam or the license plate. A 'perfect' install can turn into a useless rear camera because the rack lifts the camera's view. Measure first.
Checkpoint: Is the receiver 2-inch or 1.25-inch? What's the class rating? Does the rack block the rear camera or license plate? Answer those before you place the order.
Notes and Mistakes to Avoid
If you skip ahead, these are the mistakes that still show up in install work. (I keep making them too, which is why the checklist exists.)
Test parking mode with the OBD-II power cable. The dash cam can work great at first and then reboot randomly because the port loses power differently. Test it with the engine off, not just while driving.
Don't trust 'guaranteed' dash cam claims. Per FTC guidelines (ftc.gov), advertising claims need substantiation. Instead of a guarantee, look for parking-mode functionality, sample footage, and a clean install path.
Time matters. When an emergency order needs to arrive by Friday, don't rely on 'probably.' We paid $400 extra for overnight delivery once because the alternative was missing a $15,000 event. The rush fee hurt. The missed event would have hurt a lot more.
